F3-N: Kubo Scores Forth 2014 Win
In clear sunny weather after a typhoon Kenta Yamashita of PETRONAS TEAM TOM'S topped the times in the practice session 1 on Friday for Rd 8 and Rd 9 of Japanese Formula 3 Championship at Fuji Speedway in 1m36.655, while despite with sharp temperature rise the HFDP RACING rookie Tsubasa Takahashi came into the spotlight in the afternoon, setting the best time of the session 2.
In another good weather on Saturday Mitsunori Takaboshi of B-MAX Racing Team with NDDP took pole for Rd. 8 – his second pole of the season after Rd 1 at Suzuka. After a close battle Rintaro Kubo (TOCHIGI Le Beausset Motorsports) secured his 3rd pole in F3-N class 0.076s clear of Hiroshi Koizumi (HANASHIMA RACING) ahead of Shohei Yuzawa of KCMG.
◎ Takaboshi Immediately Reclaims the Lead Lost to Katsuta at Start
The blue sky still visible in the qualifying was being overcast by dark clouds as the race started for a total of 15 laps yet still in the dry conditions.
Both Takaboshi and Katsuta got good start in the front row with the PETRONAS TEAM TOM'S driver having the edge on the pole-sitter in acceleration. Even though Katsuta could not get ahead in the first corner he kept abreast of Takaboshi and blindsided to grab the lead into the Coca-Cola. The top two enjoyed over 1.5 second lead as early as on lap 2 while right behind them Matsushita was furiously charging Yamashita.
There was another move on lap 3 with the battle over the lead as Takaboshi aimed his car down the inside of Katsuta into Dunlop corner to snatch back the top spot while Katsuta was troubled by unexplained grip drop, allowing Yamashita to move past him at the first corner on lap 4 and continuing to lose positions. Now with clearer racing line ahead Yamashita gained momentum to catch up with Takaboshi but could not reduce the gap below 5 tenths in the middle stages as the race leader pulled away with a spurt.
Making one place to 6th ahead of Takahashi at start Daiki Sasaki of B-MAX Racing Team with NDDP skyrocketed with 2 passings at the first corner to 4th place while slipstreaming slow-running Katsuta – taking Shota Kiyohara (TODA RACING) on lap 2 and Matsushita on lap 5 – until finally getting ahead of Katsuta at Coca-Cola on lap 8. Katsuta was closed in by Matsushita and Kiyohara on lap 10, running three-wide through the first corner before Katsuta had to cede the 3rd spot.
With Takaboshi's pace slightly dropping off in the closing stages, Yamashita was closing in on Takaboshi again, but all he could do was defend from charging Sasaki. In fact, maybe he should be praised for having reduced as much as 2 second gap at the end of the 13th lap eventually to 5 tenths. Takaboshi scored his first win since Rd. 2 at Suzuka and set the fastest lap.
◎ F3-N: Kubo Wins from Yamaguchi with Koizumi in 3rd
In F3-N class Koizumi made a good start as usual to get past Kubo, but Kubo immediately snatched back the lead at the hairpin. Koizumi, however, challenged Kubo in to Dunlop corner on the opening lap, and at the first corner on lap 2 having slipstreamed on the straight before colliding with Kubo at Coca-Cola, leaving Kubo in front and spinning himself to the back of the field. While Kubo even opened up his lead over Tairoku Yamaguchi (TAIROKU EXCEED) to one second a lap later he was forced to drive for the remaining laps nursing his left hand damaged by the collision. After a good start in 5th place Yamaguchi outtoughed Yuzawa through the first corner and then shot past Ai Miura (EXEDY RACING) on lap 2. Behind the top two lapping with the same gap Koizumi was furiously catching up, overtaking Yuzawa on lap 8 and setting the quickest lap of the class on lap 9 to finish third.
Kubo hung on the lead to score 4th win of the season and close to within just 1 point behind the championship lead Koizumi. Yamaguchi secured his forth podium finish.
