Nobuharu Matsushita of HFDP RACING took pole for Rd. 9 of the Japanese Formula 3 Championship at Fuji Speedway in 1m36.324, nearly 2 tenths clear of the championship lead Kenta Yamashita of PETRONAS TEAM TOM'S. "I've been working to improve my driving style, and it has paid off. If I don't fail at the start I think I can do it!" Matsushita expressed confidence. The 3rd place went to Mitsunori Takaboshi of B-MAX Racing Team with NDDP, who was aiming for back-to-back win with Tsubasa Takahashi of HFDP RACING in 4th.
Hiroshi Koizumi of HANASHIMA RACING qualified in 1st place of F3-N class, followed by Rintaro Kubo (TOCHIGI Le Beausset Motorsports) and Shohei Yuzawa (KCMG).
The sky was covered by even thicker gray clouds and it looked like rain at any moment on Sunday but the weather held up till the end and the race was fought completely in dry conditions.

◎An Incident at the Start Determines the Fate
Matsushita and Yamashita started in the front row almost simultaneously. Yamashita was a bit faster in acceleration, but Matsushita firmly defended as Yamashita had to let off the gas as he approached the pit wall, allowing the pole-sitter to make it through the first corner in front.
Immediately after that an accident occurred – from the innermost side Kubo dived in to the first corner too fast to stop and collided against Nanin Indra-Payoong of CERUMO INGING Jr., pushing the two into retirement. Luckily there was no further contact and through the chaos caused to the following F3-N pack slipped Ai Miura of EXEDY RACING to jump up to the lead having started in 5th.
At the end of the opening lap, Matsushita came first ahead of Yamashita, Takahashi, Takaboshi, Shota Kiyohara (TODA RACING), Takamoto Katsuta (PETRONAS TEAM TOM'S) and Daiki Sasaki (B-MAX Racing Team with NDDP), a little further back with the F3-N pack of Miura, Koizumi, DRAGON (B-MAX Racing), Yuzawa and Tairoku Yamaguchi (TAIROKU EXCEED).
With 8 tenths advantage respectively Yamashita was gradually pulling away while Miura was being closed in by the second lead. Waiting for a right opportunity for 2 laps Koizumi slipstreamed to shoot past Miura at the first corner on lap 5. Yuzawa had overtaken DRAGON to place 3rd of the class.
◎Fierce Battle over 3rd Spot
Matsushita was comfortably building up the gap over Yamashita, continuing to set new fastest laps, while the battle over 3rd spot was intensifying. Takaboshi challenged Takahashi in to the first corner on lap 6, only to be rebuffed, with the two being closed in by Katsuta. Sasaki came ahead of Kiyohara on lap 9 to move up to 6th. Despite leaping in to the first corner in front on lap 10 after running 3-wide along with Takahashi and Katsuta on the home straight Takaboshi ran wide, but managed to catch up the leaders before Katsuta and Takahashi contacted each other on the straight on lap 14 as Katsuta slipstreamed to take lead and Takahashi immediately tried to snatch it back, with the HFDP racer ending up in retirement due to suspension damage. Katsuta now faced pursuit from Takaboshi and Sasaki, both of whom had been promoted by 1 spot respectively. The two pursuers did not miss an opportunity when Katsuta made a mistake at the Dunlop on lap 17 – Takaboshi moved past at the 13 Corner, and

Sasaki, having tried to jump up the inside of Katsuta in to the final turn, also slipstreamed on the straight a lap later to bear down Katsuta. However, this was not the end of the battle.
Sasaki jumped Takaboshi to succeed in overtaking his team-mate on the straight on lap 19 to place in 3rd having started in 7th as he did in the previous round.
The lead two were comfortably lapping alone respectively and Matsushita eased to victory by 2.6s at the line over Yamashita. Having set the fastest lap he earned full marks. This pushed him up just 1 point behind the championship lead Yamashita. Sasaki placed in 3rd – 4 consecutive podium finishes.
◎ Koizumi Earns His 4th win from Miura
Koizumi held on to the lead of the class that he had grabbed from Miura to earn 4th win of the season and extend his lead in the point standing as Kubo retired. Miura was following closely with setting better times than the class lead on a couple of laps, ending up in 2nd place to secure the first podium since the Rd. 5 at Twin Ring Motegi. Yuzawa finished in 3rd and DRAGON in 4th – his best result of 2014.
