全日本F3選手権の第5大会は、今季2回目のレース開催となるツインリンクもてぎが舞台となった。金曜日に1時間30分ずつ2セッション行われた専有走行では、1分47秒086をマークしたB-MAX Racing Team with NDDPの佐々木大樹がトップ。これがターゲットタイムとなるかと思われたが、土曜日になって天候は一転し、金曜日までは真夏日だったのに対し、雲がサーキット上空を覆うように。そのため、気温、路面温度とも著しく下がったこと、さらにスーパーフォーミュラの走行直後に予選が行われたため、上位陣は一気にタイムを上げることとなった。
◎TODA RACINGの清原が初PPをゲット！
その結果、第10戦の予選でトップタイムを記し、F3で自身初めてのポールポジションを獲得したのはTODA RACINGの清原章太。ラストアタックで1分45秒537を記し

、PETRONAS TEAM TOM'Sの勝田貴元、HFDP RACINGの松下信治、B-MAX Racing Team with NDDPの高星明誠、そしてPETRONAS TEAM TOM'Sの山下健太を僅差で抑えることになった。
今回はTODA RACINGが2カーエントリーとなり、スポット参戦ながらイギリスやドイツでF3を戦うサム・マックラウドが出場。ふたりでデータを共有し合い、セッティングを進めていったのが功を奏した形となったものの、「まだ喜べません。決勝でしっかり勝てた時に喜べると思います」と清原はきっぱり語っていた。
F3-NクラスではHANASHIMA RACINGの小泉洋史が1分49秒179をマークして、今季4回目のPPを奪う。これに続いたのはKCMGの湯澤翔平で、3番手はTOCHIGI Le Beausset Motorsportsの久保凛太郎だったが、その久保は前回の接触に対するペナルティーとして3グリッド降格に。EXEDY RACING TEAMの三浦愛以下が繰り上がり、久保は6番手から決勝レースに挑むこととなった。
◎スタートで勝田がトップに！ PP清原に不運
14周で争われる第10戦の決勝レースは、降雨の予報も一部にはあったものの、何とかドライコンディションがキープされることとなった。その中で、迎えたスタートをポールシッターの清原以上に決めたのは、同じフロントロウに並んでいた勝田だった。ストレートエンドで清原に並びかけると、1コーナーの立ち上がりで勝田が前に出ることに成功。このふたりに続いたのは松下ながら、4コーナーでダートに足を取られ、高星と山下の先行を許してしまう。
オープニングの1周のみで清原に1秒の差をつけた勝田は、その後も「タイヤをきれいに使いつつ」逃げ続ける。さらに4周目に「それまでも予兆があって、ピットにも何かおかしい」と伝えていた清原は1コーナーでオーバーランしたばかりか、130Rでコースアウト。足まわりにもダメージを負って、その場でレースを終えることとなる。これで高星が2番手に浮上した一方で、トップの勝田はギャップを3秒以上に広げることに。その後にファステストラップを連発し、完全に逃げの体勢に入っていった。
◎F3-Nでは小泉が三つ巴の攻防を制す
F3-Nクラスでは小泉がそつのないスタートを切って、トップで1コーナーに。これに三浦愛が湯澤を5コーナーでかわして2番手に浮上。その際に接触があった影響か、ペースを思うように上げられない湯澤は、追い上げてきた久保に2周目のS字で抜かれた後、7周目の1コーナーでも山口大陸と接触してスピン。グラベルにスタックし、無念のリタイアを喫することになる。その後、三浦愛と久保による2番手争いが激しくなり、その様子をミラー越しに見ていた小泉は、ペースを上げようとするが、むしろ2台は迫ってくるように。中盤からは縦一列で小泉、三浦愛、久保が連なることとなる。
しかし、久保は序盤の激しい追い上げが祟ったかタイヤが厳しくなり、また同じように終盤タイヤが厳しくなった三浦愛も小さなミスを連発してしまう。これにより、最後の力を振り絞った小泉が逃げ切りを果たし、今季5勝目をマークすることとなった。2位は三浦愛が獲得し、3位の久保はファステストラップをマーク。なお、4位の山口に続いたのは今回スポット参戦でF3デビューを飾った三浦勝で、DRAGONが6位となった。
◎勝田貴元が独走で今季初優勝をマーク！
もちろん、その間にも独走体勢を崩さなかった勝田のトップは安泰。「スタートとレース展開は完璧でした」と、まったく危なげない走りで14周を走り切り、今季初優勝を挙げることとなった。2位は高星が獲得し、予選5番手からふたつ順位を上げた山下は、今季9回目の表彰台に上がることとなり、引き続きランキングのトップをキープした。

● Katsuta clinches first 2014 win
● F3-N: Koizumi dominates the race from start to finish
The Japanese Formula 3 Championship returned to Twin Ring Motegi for its 5th event of the 2014 season. Daiki Sasaki of B-MAX Racing Team with NDDP topped the two practice sessions of 90 minutes each on Friday with 1m47.086, which was initially thought to be a target time for the qualifying, but with significant drop in both air and track temperatures on Saturday once the qualifying session started just after the practice session of Super Formula series much better times were set.
◎ Kiyohara secures his first F3 pole
Setting 1m45.537 on his last attack Shota Kiyohara of TODA RACING secured his first F3 pole narrowly ahead of Takamoto Katsuta (PETRONAS TEAM TOM'S), Nobuharu Matsushita (HFDP RACING), Mitsunori Takaboshi (B-MAX Racing Team with NDDP) and Kenta Yamashita (PETRONAS TEAM TOM'S). When it comes to entry Toda Racing ran an extra car over the Motegi race weekend – for Sam MacLeod competing in F3 championships in UK and Germany this season. Sharing data and working together on setups with MacLeod really helped Kiyohara get the good result. "But I can't celebrate until I win the race," Kiyohara braced himself.
Hiroshi Koizumi of HANASHIMA RACING secured 4th pole of the season in F3-N class with a time of 1m49.179 ahead of Shohei Yuzawa (KCMG). Rintaro Kubo (TOCHIGI Le Beausset Motorsports) qualified 3rd place but was handed a penalty of 3 grids drop for a collision in the previous race to start in 6th, bringing up the rear of the drivers by one place each including Ai Miura (EXCEDY RACING TEAM) up to 3rd for the F3-N grid.
◎ Katsuta takes the lead with good Start
◎ Misfortune for pole-sitter Kiyohara
Despite high probability of rain the dry conditions were kept throughout the 14-lap race. Kiyohara made a good start, but another front-row starter Katsuta made a better start to line up with him at the end of the straight and took the lead at the exit of the first corner. Matsushita followed the two leaders before being trapped in the gravel at Turn 4, allowing Takaboshi and Yamashita to breeze past.
Katsuta was extending nearly 1 second lead that he earned just on the opening lap, while maneuvering the tyres, as Kiyohara became convinced of abnormalities in the car and said over the radio "Something is wrong". The pole-sitter ran wide through the first corner on lap 4 and then went off the track at the 130R turn. This damaged his suspension and eventually forced him to retire. Now with more than three seconds gap over Takaboshi, Katsuta pulled away into a solid lead, setting fastest laps again and again.
◎ F3-N: Koizumi fends off charging Kubo and Miura
In F3-N class Koizumi made a reasonably good start to turn the first corner in front, while Yuzawa was struggling with his slow pace perhaps as a result of a contact made when he was overtaken by Ai Miura at Turn 5. Yuzawa lost another place to Kubo at S-turn on lap 2, and spun through a contact with Tairoku Yamaguchi at the first corner on lap 7 before being stuck in the gravel eventually into retirement. Keeping his eye through his rear view mirrors on an intensified battle going on over 2nd spot between Ai Miura and Kubo, Koizumi tried to pick up his pace to pull away, but only to find them closing in on him, with the trio forming a straight line in the middle of the race.
Koizumi, however, used all his strength to hold on to the lead and scored his fifth win as Ai Miura and Kubo suffered from ailing tyres after the furious catch-ups in early laps. Despite making a series of small mistakes in the closing laps Ai Miura placed 2nd. Having set the fastest lap Kubo finished 3rd ahead of Yamaguchi, with Masaru Miura in 5th who made his debut in F3 as a wild card ahead of DRAGON.
◎ Katsuta wins first 2014 victory unopposed
Meanwhile, Katsuta dominated the 14-lap race and won his first 2014 victory unopposed. "Both the start and the race development were perfect," recalled Katsuta. Having started in 5th Yamashita scored 9th podium finish in 3rd behind Takaboshi, and maintained his lead in the standings.
